Abstract:

The Maya forest is a garden, so say economic botanists. This garden is the legacy of the ancient Maya who co-created the forest landscape over millennia. This great civilization built magnificent Temples, managed interconnected water reservoirs, calculated math using zero, predicted astronomical movements, and recorded historical events in stone.  It has been assumed that the Maya collapsed because of environmental mismanagement.  This presentation will show that the traditional Maya agricultural cycle works with nature, conserves water, enhances soil fertility, manages biodiversity, inhibits erosion, and feeds people. We are showing this example at the major Maya center of El Pilar. This locally grounded model provides the essentials for sustaining the landscape of the tropics and beyond.
