Research visits

1)Visited the Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge as a part of the ongoing Royal Society project from 12th July- 5th August 2019 for meetings with the collaborators to discuss scientific ideas and future project ideas. Royal Society London has funded this visit. 

2)Visited the Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge as a part of the ongoing Royal Society project from 23rd May- 9th June 2018 for meetings with the collaborators to discuss scientific ideas and future project ideas. Royal Society London has funded this visit. 

3)Visited the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Madras from 2nd April- 3rd April 2019 for a scientific discussion and to set up collaboration with experts in thin film deposition and device preparation. Royal Society London has funded this visit. 
Industry visit

1)Visited Salem Co-operative Dye Association in Salem, Tamilnadu, India from 28th March- 1st April 2019 to look at water treatment and decontamination processes used in the industry. Royal Society London has funded this visit. 

Teaching Courses Organized
The following new three courses (Theory + experiments) were designed for M.Sc students:
1)    Theory course design on “Introduction to nanoscience and nanotechnology”.
2)    Practical course design on “Synthesis of CuO nanoparticles for photocatalytic dye degradation”.
3)    Practical course design on “Mineralization of antibiotic/pollutants using Fe3O4 nanoparticles”.

Research Statement


  • Synthesis of various sized and shaped pure semiconductors, rare earth doped semiconductors, semiconductor-semiconductor and rare earth based core@shell nanostructures using different synthetic techniques such as colloidal, hydrothermal, sonochemical, sol-gel, microwave and ionic liquid assisted synthesis.
  • Understanding the influence of shape, size and core@shell structures on the various physical properties of nanomaterials.
  • Analysis of nanomaterials using various characterization techniques such as XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, FTIR, Raman, XPS, BET, AFM, UV-Vis, Photoluminescence (PL), Time-resolved spectroscopy and electrical I-V study.
  • Investigation of core-to-shell energy transfer using steady state and time resolved spectroscopy.
  • Studying influences of lattice parameters and lattice strain on the physical properties of nanomaterials.
  • Evaluation of photocatalytic activity of different sized and shaped semiconductors and core@shell semiconductor heterostructured nanomaterials.
  • Investigating the optical properties of rare earth doped nanomaterials in detail by using steady state and time resolved spectroscopy.
