Research
Dr. Jhuma Ganguly is working in the carbohydrate chemistry more than twenty five years including her PhD, Postdoctoral Research in Complex Cabohydrate Research Centre, Athens, Georgia, USA for the analysis of polysaccharides from pathogenic bacteria Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, B. anthracis, meningitis etc. and prepared protein polysaccharides (isolated) conjugate and 14 years as independent research career after that in India. She is efficient in the Structural characterization of carbohydrates from algae, fungi, plants, bacteria, etc. She has established a well-equipped laboratory for analysis of carbohydrate samples and the synthesis of hydrogel from biomaterials, low molecular gelators, their characterization, synthesis of medicinal aromatic moieties, amphiphiles, and application-related research works currently. She has significant contributions in functionalized polysaccharides for the adsorption of organic pollutants, toxic gases, for sensing of metal ions, drug delivery, cell imaging, as anti-yeast, anti-fungal, anti-microbial, and the study of aggregation. The skilled scholars and research groups have also established a mechanism for each experiment with DFT and Docking studies.
Person's life
I am Dr. Jhuma Ganguly, currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur, West Bengal, India. My husband’s name is Dr. Dipesh Gangopadhyay (husband), and my son’s name is Samriddha Ganguly. During my school years in Durgapur, I was attracted to chemistry. I was fortunate to have wonderful academic ambiances in Durgapur Government College and subsequently in the Burdwan University (BSc and MSc). I pursued my Ph.D. at the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB-CSIR), awarded from Jadavpur University. After completing my Ph.D., I joined the West Bengal College Service as Lecturer in Chemistry and later I joined the Department of Chemistry in the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur (the then Bengal Engineering and Science University) as an Assistant Professor in 2003 and working there since then.
