About


Dr. Saptarshi Kundu has graduated in Civil Engineering (B.C.E) from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India in 2011 and secured MTech and Ph.D in Geotechnical Engineering from IIT Bombay, India in 2013 and 2020. Post defense, Dr. Kundu worked as a Research Associate in the Department of Civil Engineering before joining IIEST Shibpur . His primary research interests include Geotechnical Physical Modelling and Instrumentation, Computational Geomechanics and coupled hydro-mechanical analysis, Ground Improvement of Geomaterials, and Soil response to dynamic loading. 

Dr. Kundu was involved in the core committee for designing a 2.2 m diameter medium-scale beam centrifuge facility at IIT Bombay with a maximum acceleration level of 300 g. One of his significant research contributions include development of an in-flight actuator for simulating dynamic compaction at enhanced gravities in a geotechnical centrifuge, which is capable of replicating pore water pressure response in saturated soils during tamping and its subsequent dissipation. The effect of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) pore fluid substitution could be investigated in the context of dynamic compaction using this developed actuator.
