About

Having graduated in Mining Engineering from the University ofCalcutta, Prof Sinha joined IIT Kharagpur in 1982 to obtain an MTech degree in Mine Planning and Mechanisation in 1984. He served NIT Rourkela (then a R E College) as lecturer for a brief stint of twenty months and then joined the faculty of Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad as a Lecturer in Mining Engineering.

He undertook postgraduate studies in Opencast Mining at the ‘Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Paris’ and obtained a diplôme d'études approfondies (D.É.A.) in géologie de l'ingénieur form Université Paris V and also a ‘Diplôme D'études Supérieures Spécialisées’ in ‘Mines A Ciel Ouvert’ From L’Ecole des Mines, Paris

In 1992 he switched discipline to join as an Assistant Professor in Mining Environment at the same Institute. He undertook doctoral research in environmental science and engineering and received his PhD (engineering) degree in 2000. In 2004 he joined this Institute (the then Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur) as its Registrar, - a position he held for a little over two years. In January 2007, he returned to teaching to join the Department of Mining Engineering at the same Institute on the substantive post of Professor in Mining Engineering, - a post he has been holding for nearly twelve years.

During his professional career that spans over three and a half decades Prof Sinha has been engaged in teaching and research in various areas falling mainly in the disciplines of opencast mining and mining environment.
