Dr. Syed Minhaz Hossain was born and brought up in the undivided Midnapore district of West Bengal. After completing his Schooling at Panskura Bradley Birt High School and Balichak Bhajahari Institution respectively, he came to Kolkata for higher studies. Currently, he is an Associate Professor at the Department of physics, IIEST, Shibpur. He performed his doctoral work on optoelectronic properties of nanocrystalline Silicon at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Jadavpur University and Received Ph.D. degree in the year 2002. He got M.Sc. and B.Sc. degrees from the Department of Physics at Jadavpur University in 1996 and 1994 respectively. Minhaz was awarded a BOYSCAST fellowship by the DST (Govt. of India), to work on nano-crystalline silicon-based 3rd generation photovoltaics at the University of Trento, Italy during 2007-08. He also received a KR fellowship from the American Physical Society(APS) on the recommendation of Indian Association of Physics Teachers during 2012-13 to work on Physics Education at SUNY @ Buffalo, USA. He was a visiting professor at the University of Buffalo during Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 semesters. His current research interests cover the area of low-dimensional silicon, carbon and their nano-composites for photonic and photovoltaic and sensing applications. He has supervised doctoral research of more than twelve Ph. D students and published over a hundred research papers in different journals and conference proceedings. Currently, five Ph.D. students are working with him. Beyond the mainstream, he is actively involved in physics education research through the development of experiments for postgraduate, undergraduate and school-level physics teaching. Other than physics, he is fond of music, sports and wildlife photography.
Ph.D, (on Optoelectronic Properties of nanostructured Silicon) from the Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Jadavpur University -2002
M.Sc. Physics (with specialization in Computational Physics) from the Department of Physics, Jadavpur University-1996
B.Sc Physics from the Department of Physics, Jadavpur University-1994
- Low dimensional solid state physics: We develop low-dimensional semiconductors based on Silicon and Carbon in the nanoscale. Quantum structures of Silicon are synthesized in the laboratory for both fundamental and application-oriented studies.Photonic and Photovoltaic applications of the low dimensional semiconductors are explored. Electronic transport properties along with the optoelectronic properties of the synthesized quantum dots and rods are studied for their potential applications as light sources and in different types of sensors.

- Physics Education Research: Other than the mainstream research, our group is actively involved in developing experimental setups for teaching laboratories in the Post graduate, Undergraduate and even in the school level.
