Dr. Joydeep Bhowmik joined the Department of Aerospace and Applied Mechanics at IIEST Shibpur in 2018 as a faculty member, bringing a passion for innovation-driven research and product development. With expertise in system integration, reverse engineering, and manufacturing techniques, he combines technical skills with creative vision. Dr. Bhowmik encourages students to adopt a sportive and innovative approach to learning. His interests extend beyond academia, as he enjoys designing and flying model aircraft, UAVs, and ornithopters. Notably, he has successfully designed a groundbreaking wing design for flapping wing UAVs, showcasing his exceptional talent in aerodynamics and innovation.

Research Statement
My research focuses on innovative research and product development in aerospace engineering, with a strong emphasis on aerodynamics, flight dynamics, and manufacturing technology. I am passionate about exploring new ideas and technologies that can transform the field of aerospace engineering and push the boundaries of what is currently possible.

Research Areas

  • Aerodynamics: Behaviour of air and its interactions with objects in motion, focusing on understanding and predicting aerodynamic phenomena.
  • Flight Dynamics: Study the motion of aircraft and other flying vehicles, including their stability, control, and performance.
  • Wind Tunnel Testing: Design and fabricate fixtures for model mount and develop measuring instruments to test and validate aerodynamic and flight dynamic theories.
  • Aircraft Design: Designing and developing innovative aircraft configurations, including UAVs, ornithopters, and rotorcraft.
  • Manufacturing Technology: Investigate new manufacturing techniques and materials to improve the efficiency, quality, and sustainability of aerospace manufacturing.
