School of Advanced Materials, Green Energy and Sensor Systems

About the School

Welcome to School of Advanced Materials, Green Energy and Sensor Systems (SAMGESS)

The School of Advanced Materials, Green Energy & Sensor Systems started functioning as a seat of multidisciplinary research and education in the year 2021, after the merger of the Dr. M.N. Dastur School of Materials Science & Engineering (MND-SMSE) and the Centre of Excellence for Green Energy and Sensor Systems (CEGESS). The need to integrate the efforts of scientists and Engineers working with different aspects of a wide variety of materials, devices and systems in general and green energy and sensors in specific, has been the primary motivation for the creation of this school. The school emphasizes providing a holistic approach in research and manpower development to create new knowledge and lay the foundations for new technologies for green energy with emphasis to solar energy.

The research and education at the school are closely associated with industries and several national and foreign academic institutions of repute to foster cutting edge research and establish ourselves as a leader in this field. Department of Science and Technology, Government of India has established the first solar PV hub in India called DST-IIEST Solar PV Hub having the industry compatible state of art facilities for the fabrication, characterization and research on advanced silicon solar cells and modules which has been recently inaugurated by Hon’ble Minister of Education, Government of India. Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India has also sponsored generous projects for developing cutting edge thin silicon solar cells and modules in the school which was inaugurated by Padma Vibhushan Dr. Anil Kakodkar, former Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission and Solar Energy Corporation of India. West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Agency (WBREDA) under the Department of Power, Government of West Bengal has sponsored the establishment of a state of art Solar-Wind-Bio Microgrid centre which was inaugurated by the President of India.

Interests within the school span the entire spectrum of engineering materials including metals polymers, solid -state device materials, ceramics, composites, biomaterials (including quantum dot-based biosensors), energy and environmental materials for advancement of knowledge and potential applications. Semiconductor devices like homo and heterojunction devices including silicon solar cells and other types of solar cells like perovskite and organic solar cells are designed, fabricated and characterized with a view to make them useful for practical applications. Design and development of Solar Photovoltaic Modules and systems, solar energy storage system, smart Micro grid, SMART Sensors using novel materials and methods for agricultural, environmental, automobile and healthcare applications are actively pursued in the school.

The School also undertakes industry Interactive development and service including consultancy services. It has already signed up MOUs with a number of industries and continues to serve the needs of industry for technology development and up gradation.
