Dr. Dipankana Bhattacherjee has graduated in Civil Engineering from Jadavpur University and completed M.Tech. and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. Dr. Bhattacherjee served as a Research Associate in the Department of Civil Engg., IIT Bombay, before joining as Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (Formerly, Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur). Her primary research interests include Geotechnical Engineering, Experimental Geotechnics, Geotechnical Centrifuge Modelling and Application of Geosynthetics in Geotechnics.
One of the significant and innovative research developments of Dr. Bhattacherjee includes the design and fabrication of an in-flight rainfall simulator at enhanced gravity levels in a centrifuge, which is capable of inducing in-flight rainfall of various intensity and duration on geotechnical structures using specially designed pneumatic nozzles. The designed simulator can be used to replicate diverse prototype natural hazards, ranging from long-term medium intensity rainfall to a short spell of very high-intensity rainfall. In recognition of her research contributions, Dr. Bhattacherjee has been conferred upon the Excellence in Ph.D. Research for the year 2017-19 by Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Young Geotechnical Engineer Award sponsored by Centre for Geomechanics and Railway Engineering, University of Wollongong, Australia, and Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS), IGS-Kolkata Chapter Young Geotechnical Engineer (YGE) Award for the year 2021 and IGS-Dr. B.B. Rai-S.N. Gupta Biannual Prize for the BEST PAPER on “Earth and Earth-Retaining Structures, Including Interaction and Instrumentation” for the year 2011-2012. Dr. Bhattacherjee is also the recipient of the prestigious Young Faculty Research Award (YFRA)-2021 bestowed by the IIEST Alumni Association - Washington Metropolitan Area (IIESTAA-WMA) and GAABESU Shibpur Foundation, USA. Dr. Bhattacherjee additionally serves as a regular reviewer of internationally acclaimed journal papers, including the Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering (ASCE), International Journal of Geomechanics (ASCE), Geotextiles and Geomembranes (Elsevier) and Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (Elsevier).
