Bhabani Prasad Mukhopadhyay

About

Dr. Bhabani Prasad Mukhopadhyay was born in Durgapur, Burdwan Dist. ( Now Paschim Bardhaman), West Bengal, India. He completed his schooling from A-Zone Multipurpose School, Durgapur and then graduated from Durgapur Government College, Durgapur. After completion of Post Graduate degree, he served Raniganj T D B College ( Govt. Sponsored College) for nearly 14 years. Then joined Bengal Engineering College ( Deemed University), Dr. Mukhopadhyay became the Founder Head of the Department of Geology ( Now Department of Earth Sciences) in 2005. .In 2008, the Department was renamed as Department of Earth Sciences to encourage the multidisciplinary research activities in the Department from various branches of Earth Sciences like Geophysics, Oceanography, Meteorology etc. in association with Geology under the Headship and with the initiative of Dr. B.P.Mukhopadhyay.The Department received DST-FIST (1st phase) grant in 2008 and the project was implemented under the Chairmanship of Dr. Mukhopadhyay. He established the Hydrogeological research in the Department of Earth Sciences, IIEST,Shibpur in 2014. At present he is working on Hydrogeological problems in agricultural belt of West Bengal, India. Research on the environmental and hydrogeological problems related to the Thermal Power Plant in West Bengal are also being carried out from the Hydrogeological Laboratory, Along with this the studies are being done on the different environmental problems, especially the consequences of the global climate changes and unplanned growth of urbanisation, like groundwater depletion, drought, landslide, flash flood in the mountainous region.

Apart from the academic research, Dr. Mukhopadhyay is interested in popular science writing in vernacular medium, especially for the schoolgoers. Popularisation of science in vernacular medium is his passion. He is writer of a good number of books on popular science in Bengali.
