Dr. Suvarun Dalapati specializes in the field of Power Electronics, Machine Drives, FACTS & HVDC Converters and Applications of Digital Control/Controllers in Electrical Engineering Applications.
He earned the B.E. degree in Electrical Engineering from Bengal Engineering College (D.U.), Shibpur in 2002, and the M. Tech. and Ph.D. degrees from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in 2004 and 2008 respectively, all in Electrical Engineering, specializing in the field of Machine Drives and Power Electronics. He is the recepient of the Indranil Mallik award for acdemic achievements during his B.E. course-work. He also received the High Value Fellowship, sponsored by SRIC, IIT Kharagpur, for his doctoral research work at IIT Kharagpur.
After his doctoral study, he joined the design and development wing of M/s Stesalit Limited in 2007, and served the organization first as Sr. Project Engineer (R & D) and then as Assistant General Manager (R & D) for the next six years. During his tenure in industry, he was engaged in the designing of power electronic converters, inverters, motor-drives and battery-chargers for Indian Railways and high stability (20 - 50 ppm) DC power supplies for the Dept. of Atomic Energy, Govt. of India.
In June 2013, he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering at Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (then known as Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur), as a faculty member.
Dr. Dalapati is an enthusiastic experimenter, who has technically contributed in developing several experimental set-ups at various laboratories of the Department of Electrical Engineering, e.g. the Power Electronics Laboratory, the Machines Laboratory and the Control Systems Laboratory. He is also one of the faculty members behind setting up the new Basic Electrical Engineering Laboratory, which has one of the highest foot-falls among all laboratoies across all departments in the institute, and the Embedded Systems Laboratory, which caters to the final year students of the EE Department. In both these laboratories, multiple set-ups have been designed by Dr. Dalapati. He has also designed four new theory courses - three for UG and one for PG students in the Department of Electrical Engineering.
Apart from being engaged in UG and PG courses, Dr. Dalapati is also an active researcher in his fields of specialization. He has guided one doctoral scholar to his PhD degree (in 2025) and is currently guiding four more doctoral students. He has also guided seven M. Tech. students towards their Masters thesis. All the above research work has resulted in several research papers in reputed national and international journals, including IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics and IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, and several conferences of repute by IEEE. He also has two copyrights to his name, apart from four patent applications, of which two have been granted till date. He currently heads two consultancy projects as PI and is involved at present in two research projects, funded by GoI, as Co-PI.
Dr. Dalapati is a Senior Member of IEEE (USA) and is also a member of the IEEE Industry Applications Society, IEEE Power Electronics Society and IEEE Industrial Electronics Society. He has acted as an office bearer for the IEEE Industry Applications Society, Kolkata Chapter, for more than a decade (2009 - 2020). He is also a Life Member of the Institution of Engineers, India, the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunications Engineers, India and a Life Associate of the Indian Society of Lighting Engineers.
Currently Dr. Dalapati is in search for doctoral students, who are enthusiastic experimenters, willing to work in the field of Power Electronics and its appilcations, including FACTS and HVDC converters, and Microcontrollers/DSPs and their applications in Electrical Engineering. Students, interested to work in the above areas can drop a mail directly to Dr. Dalapati at suvarundalapati@yahoo.co.in.
