Dr. Shashwati Banerjee is a faculty member at the School of Management Sciences (SOMS), Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) Shibpur. She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, where her research focused on out-of-pocket health expenditures among industrial workers in urban slums, providing critical insights into health inequalities and the socio-economic challenges faced by vulnerable populations. She also earned an MS in Management from the Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSoM), IIT Kharagpur, gaining substantial expertise in economic analysis and marketing, particularly in understanding consumer behavior within low-income and informal sectors.

Dr. Banerjee specializes in Development Economics, integrating her research expertise to provide students with a deeper understanding of economic theories and their real-world applications, particularly within emerging markets. She teaches managerial economics, strategic management, business environment, and marketing management to postgraduate students at SOMS, as well as entrepreneurship management, professional ethics, and management for engineers to undergraduate students across various branches at IIEST Shibpur. Her strong background in data analysis and economic modeling enables her to guide students in developing analytical and research skills essential for strategic decision-making in management.

Her research on out-of-pocket health expenditures among industrial workers in slums and employment patterns of informal workers post-pandemic has been published in leading international journals. She has presented her findings at several prestigious conferences, including the Development Economics Conference at the University of Lincoln, UK, and the International Conference on Urban Health in Portugal. 

Dr. Banerjee serves as an Associate Editor of the peer-reviewed, Scopus-indexed journal Development in Practice and has been a reviewer for leading international journals such as Studies in Microeconomics, Sustainable Cities and Society, and Geoforum. She is also actively engaged in interdisciplinary research collaborations across various departments within the institute.

Additionally, she writes in the editorial section of leading newspapers, contributing thought-provoking articles on societal issues such as the role of institutions in economic development, the impact of budget allocations on research and development in India, and the intersection of economics and management.

Beyond teaching and research, Dr. Banerjee actively contributes to various institutional committees, fostering academic and research excellence. Her commitment to social causes is evident through her volunteer work with underprivileged communities and active participation in outreach programs such as IIEST’s Icche initiative.

Research Statement


Dr. Shashwati Banerjee's research interests include poverty, health inequalities, informal workers, migration, labor studies, women’s empowerment, and urban economic challenges. She also focuses on consumer behavior, exploring trust issues in private health insurance, trends in consumer decision-making, and marketing strategies for evolving markets.
