About


Dipanjyoti Paul is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Information Technology, IIEST Shibpur. Before joining here, he was an Assistant Professor at the department of Computer Science at the Institute of Systems and Information Engineering, University of Tsukuba, Japan. He is also a member of the Center for Artificial Intelligence Research (C-AIR). Additionally, he holds an affiliation as a Visiting Scientist in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at The Ohio State University, USA. Previously, he served as a postdoctoral fellow at the Imageomics Institute within the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at The Ohio State University, USA. Dipanjyoti Paul earned his Ph.D. from the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Patna, India. Dipanjyoti Paul's research spans various domains, focusing on the intersection of biology and machine learning, explainable AI, computer vision, streaming data, real-time summarization, among others. He has contributed to numerous journals and conferences, including ICLR, CVPR,  Knowledge-Based Systems, Pattern Recognition, Expert Systems with Applications, IEEE Transactions on Computational Social Systems, Pattern Recognition Letters, ACM Transactions on Knowledge Discovery from Data, and more.

I am looking for highly motivated PhD students to join my research group in the areas of AI and Machine Learning. Master’s and undergraduate students interested in working with me are welcome to email their CV. Students working with me are expected to have a good understanding of AI/ML, enthusiasm for learning new things, and strong coding skills. You will also have opportunities to collaborate with computer scientists and medical experts from leading universities such as the University of Tsukuba (Japan), The Ohio State University (USA), Purdue University (USA), and the University of Washington (USA). There will also be opportunities for internships in Japan through the Sakura Science Exchange Program for UG, PG, and PhD students (3–6 months).

Research Statement


Our group works in different areas of Artifical Intellengce (AI) & Machine Learning (ML).

  • AI in Biodiversity: The work lies in the intersection of machine learning and biology. Our main goal is to extract biological information from computer vision data. We mainly focus on developing explainable/interpretable models, biological foundation model, animal behavious analysis and more.
  • Medical Imaging: We work on a diverse range of areas such as Automatic radiology report generation, Surgical skill analysis, Semantic Segmentation for Surgical Navigation, Surgery difficulty prediction, explainable AI etc. We are mainly focusing on different imaging such as MRI, X-ray, CT etc. with a focus on recral cancer.
  • Trustworthy AI: Enabling We develop models for Trust in Human-AI Collaborations Through Culturally-Attuned AI and aslo studying Cultural Artifacts from Different Indian Geographical Subcultures.
