Professor Binayak S. Choudhury obtained his Bachelor’s Degree with Mathematics (Honours) from Presidency College (now Presidency University) and Master of Science degree in Applied Mathematics from the Department of Applied Mathematics, University of Calcutta. During his study in the Master’s degree courses he qualified in the National Eligibility Test Examination for Research Fellowship (NET) in which he topped the national list of successful candidates. He joined University of Calcutta as Research Fellow and obtained Ph.D. Degree in Applied Mathematics. His Ph.D. thesis is in the domain of Applied Functional Analysis in which he had initiated a new line of research through his doctoral work. A recipient of several awards and prizes, Dr. Choudhury joined the Institute in 1995 in the rank of Associate Professor and was promoted to the post of Professor of Mathematics in 2003 in the Merit Promotion Scheme. He was placed in the Higher Administrative Grade Professorship in 2021. Presently he is continuing in the same post. He has served the Institute as Head of the Department of Mathematics from 2005 to 2008 and as Dean (Science) from 2013 to 2015. He has specialized in a number of fields of PureMathematics, Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. He has published widely in different areas of pure and applied mathematics, theoretical physics and decision science having more than 300 publications in refereed journals to his credit. Some of these publications are highly cited in their respective fields. He has research collaborations with many faculties from Universities/ Institutes in India and abroad. He is a reviewer of Mathematical Review and of many journals from prominent publishers like Elsevier, Springer, Taylor and Francis, World Scientific, etc. Till now 23 Research Scholars have been awarded Ph.D. degree under his supervision and several others are pursuing their Ph.D. works. As Principal Investigator he has completed a number of research projects funded by Department of Atomic Energy, University Grants Commission (Govt. of India), etc. He has acted as subject expert in several bodies under Government of India. He has been associated with other Institutes, Universities, Government Organizations and Societies, both national (Indian) and international, as advisor/member of several councils, boards and committees. He has visited several countries in connection with his works. He has delivered invited talks widely across the world on subjects of mathematics, physics and philosophy. Outside the professional academics he takes keen interest in language and literature, particularly in Bengali, English and Sanskrit poetry. Professor Choudhury is also actively associated with the movement of popularising Sanskrit language amongst mankind.
